As a global leader in logistics and transportation, the MSC Group is built on a deep commitment to people and the communities we serve. Through our group of companies, we aim to champion sustainable practices and invest in projects that foster lasting growth.
One illustration of this commitment is MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), which prioritizes community engagement and collaboration around social and environmental matters. As Africa’s leading supply chain partner, MSC plays a pivotal role in addressing the continent’s persistent power challenges, helping to spur progress and industrialization and ensure long-term sustainability through renewable energy sources.
Africa faces an energy shortage and widespread lack of access to electricity, making it the most energy-deprived continent. In 2022, 98 percent of the 600 million people who lacked access to electricity resided in sub-Saharan Africa.
A lack of reliable access to electricity can hold back the continent’s industrialization efforts which, in turn, slows the growth of local and national economies. Therefore, tackling these power challenges is essential for powering economic development, improving quality of life and achieving universal access to clean energy across the continent.
As Africa’s population is expected to surge from 1.4 billion to 2.5 billion people by 2050, tackling the energy deficit requires urgent attention. To meet rising electricity demand, persistent energy challenges – such as inadequate generation capacity, limited connectivity, unreliable services and high costs – must be resolved. And MSC plans to be part of the solution.
The Julius Nyerere Hydro Electric Power Plant Project has two critical goals that will support the electrification of Tanzania and benefit its surrounding local communities.
The first is to generate up to 2,115 megawatts (MW) of electricity to meet the country’s energy needs. The second goal is for the dam to regulate water flow, which will help prevent swamps and floods. This will also allow water to be stored in a new lake, creating more consistent access to water for wildlife preservation and agricultural needs.
To support this effort, MSC shipped 30 transformers from Mundra Port, India. These units will play a crucial role in helping Tanzania pursue its goal of developing five hydropower plant projects—advancing the adoption of renewable energy, eliminating power shortages and strengthening its electricity supply.
Shipping transformers and cargo is no easy feat and requires specialized expertise to ensure that products are transported safely without structural damage. Because of the substantial weight and fragility of shipping transformers, it is essential that the shipment process, including rail and freight operations and important installations, is executed flawlessly.
MSC’s extensive experience and expertise in innovative shipping solutions for large and specialty cargo have enabled the successful management of complex logistics. This includes using advanced transportation technologies, appropriate safety protocols and specialized container solutions.
MSC carefully assesses each shipment’s needs and follows International Maritime Organization protocols to ensure cargo is placed on specially prepared beds with multiple flat racks. This approach safeguards both cargo safety and the dockworkers who handle it. In addition, MSC uses 3D modeling to illustrate lashing, stowage and handling requirements as part of its thorough planning and feasibility assessments.
MSC’s shipment of transformers represents its collaborative spirit in helping to create the infrastructure necessary for Africa’s growing energy needs. By providing specialized shipping solutions tailored to the energy sector, we ensure that these vital components reach their destinations safely, supporting the development of sustainable and reliable energy sources.
The MSC Group proudly supports MSC’s efforts to support Tanzania’s progression to sustainable energy sources and a modern economy. Our dedication to working alongside communities to foster global progress is vital to our work and collective efforts.
